Cycle Maintenance Workshops

velotech logoED’s Cycle Co-Op run a couple of different classes catering for both people in the cycling industry (although it’s not exclusive) and for everyone else, our evening courses.

For folk in the business, such as cycle mechanics, cycle trainers, TCL’s and MBL’s we offer industry recognised Velotech  accredited classes, Red to Gold (See here for more information)

For people who don’t require accreditation we offer evening classes.

All classes are delivered by our resident bike geek, who’s gained geek status from over 20 years of working and hanging about in bike shops, combined with an unusual urge to take things apart.

Fortunately, happens to be a Platinum trained Velotech cycle mechanic, so can put things back together too.

So, why do you need these?

The workshops are aimed at anyone who wants to know more about fixing their own bike, or their child’s bike.

We find a lot of the worry associated with heading out for a ride, or commute to work is not knowing what to do if you have a puncture, something breaks, or something isn’t sounding quite right, gears don’t work etc.

The workshops are designed to give you the knowledge required to be able to deal with everyday problems and help you continue enjoying riding your bike.

The workshops are pretty informal affairs, allowing plenty of hands on time and time to ask lots of questions.

We currently have three levels of classes;

Beginners classes: (2 sessions)

Intended for beginner cyclists for ‘out on the bike’ repairs and essential maintenance tips.

Modules covered:
Session 1. Bike anatomy, wheel removal and refitting, replacement of an inner tube and puncture fixing.
Session 2. Brake troubleshooting basic adjustment and setup, gear troubleshooting, basic adjustment and setup

In addition to this you’ll get hints and tips on bike setup, cleaning and lubing your bike and any other questions.

Intermediate classes: (3 sessions)

Intended for regular cyclists wishing to get their hands dirty.

Session 1. Complete brake setup and cable replacement (both V and disc brakes).
Session 2. Complete Gears setup and cable replacement (derailleur gears).
Session 3. Transmission servicing, inc cartridge BB removal, chain removal and replacement.

Advanced classes: (3 sessions)

These are intended for people already confident in the areas covered by Beginner and Intermediate who wish to service their bikes more thoroughly.

Example Modules:

Module 1. Headset servicing: installation and adjustment
Module 2. Hub servicing and adjustment.
Module 3. Bleeding Disc brakes or truing wheels.

These are flexible in that if there’s anything specific you wish to learn, we’ll do our best to incorporate it or build the session around it.

The modules will focus on the subjects outlined and teach you which tools are appropriate for each job.

All classes come with relevant handouts and email support and guidance in between sessions.

Intensive sessions

We can offer full day or half day intensive maintenance training sessions if you prefer. These can be at our premises or at a location of your choice (This can be at your home, or any other space you have available). All you need is enough space for a couple of workstands and preferably bikes to work on (although we should be able to accommodate if not). You can then have the session tailored to your requirements.

There must be a minimum of 2 participants for the intensive sessions, email for more details and pricing.

Cool, how do I sign up?

Beginners Classes are taken as a single block of 2 and are price at £30 (£15 per session) per person.

Intermediate sessions are ideally taken as a complete block of 3, but we can work around if there are dates that don’t suit. Cost for all three sessions is £50 per person.

Advanced sessions can be taken as pre booked modules, or as a complete class of 3 sessions, we’re pretty flexible on that. Each module is £20 per person, £50pp for a block booking of all three and if taken along with all Intermediate sessions you get one session free!

The workshops take part on Thursday evenings for 2 hours at our new premises, Unit 9, Lower Huntershill Village

To ensure adequate equipment and suitable course content is available it is essential to pre-book as places will be limited.

Not convinced? Check out the feedback from some of our previous attendees!

As someone who has been on a few cycle maintenance classes I felt yours outshone the others for a number of reasons. The detail covered in each session, the hands on approach to learning, and classes underpinned by follow up emails and discussion.
I do feel confident enough to strip my bike down to its component parts and put it back together without bits being left over

There are lots of instructional videos out there but nothing beats being guided through a task and assisted along the way” Gavin, Intermediate and Advanced classes.

I have enjoyed the classes and now feel a lot more comfortable about tackling jobs myself, the sessions and instruction were first class.” Andrew, Intermediate and Advanced classes.

Wanted to say how much I’ve enjoyed the sessions and can’t believe how much I’ve learned. Really appreciate your wealth of knowledge and how much you obviously have put into each session” Robbie, Intermediate and Advanced classes.

Future Activities

We will continue to adopt a ‘fix your own bike’ philosophy offering training sessions, access to workstands and tools and the experience and knowledge of our specialist cycle mechanics.

We’ll update the site with any changes in the sessions, along with one off events, Dr bike sessions and freebies.

To keep you on top of things, we’ve now compiled a few links to help you fix and maintain your bikes

Keeping you cycling.
